In a disturbing case reported on April 1st, a student lost ₹50,000 after falling prey to a scam promoted on Instagram. The student was attracted by an advertisement post that promised iPhones at exceptionally low prices and made the first contact with the seller.

First, there was a scammer asking for a small prepayment of ₹100 for advance booking. Thereafter, promptly followed demands more — ₹4,000 to deliver, later charges in the name of updating QR and importing charges. Seeing the payments in the light of a refund process, the victim went along blissfully unaware of the trap being laid.

With the cumulative payment up to ₹50,000, the seller remained stringing the customer along by offering “error problems” and charging even higher prices to enable them to facilitate a refund. That is when the student made it clear that the whole procedure was a fraud.

The saddest aspect of this fraud is that the lost ₹50,000 was meticulously saved as educational fee. The victim now wants counsel and assistance in retrieving the lost amount and servicing future financial liabilities.

Everyone is urged to exercise caution regarding online advertisements listing items at disproportionately cheap prices and reporting the scammers as soon as possible.
