A man has spoken out about his upsetting experience of emotional manipulation and financial scamming on a verified profile on the dating website. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, matched with a woman last month and quickly established what was a genuine connection.
He says the woman told him personal anecdotes, including losing her father to COVID-19 and fighting with her mother and younger brother. The conflict grew when she said her mother was in critical condition and the hospital. She begged for money, even sending what looked like a hospital bill. Hoping to assist, he wired money.
But soon, fresh excuses started to emerge. She demanded he send more money to “clear credit limits” or “keep a minimum bank balance” before she could refund the money. Thinking he’d get his money back, he kept sending money. Today, the woman keeps messaging him on WhatsApp every day, asking for more money while threatening to harm herself if he doesn’t obey.
The man is emotionally drained and embarrassed at having been a victim of the scam but courageously comes forward to warn others. Experts suggest that he cut all contact, report the matter to cybercrime police, and block her number immediately.
