One recently reported his encounter after falling prey to an internet scam using a subscription-based dating site. According to the man, he created a fictitious email account—now inaccessible to him—to register for a one-day trial subscription costing 79 pence. Without his knowledge, the subscription automatically renewed to a £38 weekly fee.
With no recollection of the name of the website or the login details, he tried to contact the site’s support team, only to be informed that they needed an ID number related to his account—details he cannot access. Even after providing his card details, the site claimed no record of the transaction, but persisted in debiting his account.
In a bid to stop further charges, he called Revolut, his banking service provider, to suspend the payments and cancel the corresponding card. Though he complained about possible legal repercussions, there is no sign that victims of such scams get into legal trouble for unwittingly signing up.
This case emphasizes the need to read terms of online subscriptions, particularly on websites with doubtful credibility. Experts recommend using secure, traceable payment methods at all times and keeping copies of all online transactions.
