A worried granddaughter has come forward with a warning about a possible romance scam on her grandmother. Her grandmother has been regularly in touch with a man who calls himself “Scott Gray,” a 42-year-old supposedly on a military mission in Syria, for almost a year now. They exchange messages only through WhatsApp calls since he says FaceTime isn’t permitted during missions. He’s even sent her a picture of herself with a loving message.
Even though no money has been requested as yet, a number of warning signs have caused alarm — such as ambiguous personal information, reluctance to use video calls, and a proposal to “marry” her in October when he is reportedly returning from Syria. Shockingly, the still-married grandmother who lives with her disabled husband is planning to take the man in upon his return.
More research by the granddaughter showed that “Scott Gray” is employing stolen images of an actual U.S. Army soldier, Sean Tobias Ambriz, who has openly warned of scammers utilizing his picture.
Experts warn that romance scams that last in the long term tend to begin slowly, with con artists taking time to establish trust before they demand money or exploitative concessions. The family wishes to intervene before things get worse and is advising others to be cautious.
