Romance frauds are among the most emotionally destructive types of fraud. These frauds take advantage of a victim’s search for companionship and exploit someone’s trust for their financial benefit. Action Fraud reported that a total of £68 million was lost to romance frauds in the UK in 2020, and sadly that number continues to rise year after year.
How do Romance Frauds work?
Romance frauds usually begin online, through dating websites, on social media platforms, or through random messaging. Scammers will typically create profiles where they use fake information, stolen images, and an entire backstory to pass off as more believable. They take the time to build an emotional bond, which means they will spend weeks or even months, gaining the trust of their target.
Once they have built that trust, they will start requesting money from the victim. These stories are almost always some kind of dramatic or urgent emergency, a business failure, travel issues, etc., that the victim is the only one who can assist with. While the tasks may start small, they quickly escalate over time.
Some frauds will request payment through gift cards, bank transfers, or cryptocurrency; anything that is hard to trace or difficult to recover. In some cases of advance fee fraud, the fraudster is able to get hold of sensitive personal data, including passwords or identification information, in order to access the victim’s finances as well.
Signs of a Romance Scam
- Reluctance to meet in real life or via video
- Always has some sort of disaster or hardship in their stories
- Requests money or asks for financial relief
- The conversation quickly moves to either intense or inappropriate
- Talk quickly moves from a dating app to private communication.
