A concerned citizen recently reported that over a weekend, they received several uninvited emails, each stating they had to finish or confirm an online credit or loan application they never made. The emails seemed to be from different financial institutions and lenders.
After reaching out to a number of the companies personally, the person was told that applications had indeed been initiated under their name and email. They immediately asked for cancellations and assured me they hadn’t authorized or initiated any of the applications.
The respondent, self-categorizing as being careful in their use of the internet, voiced increasing distress about whether any of their name or financial details had been jeopardized. While no illegitimate transactions had surfaced on their record yet, the sudden appearance of suspicious messages awakened them to fears about possible recovery for their finances and credit.
Experts caution that this may be an initial indication of identity theft, especially if name, email, or address information has been compromised or sold due to data breaches. It is advisable that people in such a scenario lock their credit reports, activate scam alerts, and keep a close eye on activity. Not reporting such emails may result in missing fraud signals, so reporting and confirming is deemed an essential first step towards safeguarding oneself.
