They specifically seek out people who have lost someone, are lonely, are under financial stress, or have cognitive problems (i.e., are not thinking straight). The average scammer’s target includes widows and other elderly individuals. The scammers have convinced the victims that the impersonators are trustworthy. When family members see the victim being taken advantage of and try to intervene, the scammers will attempt to destroy the trust between the victim and their family, portraying family members as “unsupportive and obstructive”. This tactic causes the victim to feel increasingly isolated and emotionally dependent on the scammer.
